We believe in respectful dialog, mutual support, and political action to further our ideal of effective and responsive government for all citizens.
Traverse Indivisible (TI) is a nonpartisan group that welcomes people of diverse political beliefs to address inequities and inequalities, protect our environment, and support democracy. TI seeks to build groups in Grand Traverse County to create change in ways that individuals can’t. To create change, the collective constituent power that comes with working together as Indivisibles is essential.
TI is part of the national Indivisible movement and is affiliated with Statewide Indivisible Michigan (SWIM).
The Indivisible movement in Grand Traverse county started in early 2017, in response to the election of Donald Trump. There were originally two groups, Indivisible Traverse City and Indivisible Grand Traverse. These groups worked closely together and eventually merged several years ago.
Traverse Indivisible is governed by a steering committee. We encourage you to contact us at traverseindivisible@gmail.com, or come to our regular office hours at the Grand Traverse Pie Company in downtown TC at Front and Park Streets near Horizon Books. Office hours are on the second and fourth Fridays of the month, starting at 10 am.
We are affiliated with the Statewide Indivisible Michigan (SWIM) and with the national Indivisible organization. We also work closely with our sister group Leelanau Indivisible.
Traverse Indivisible works in a number of ways throughout out community.
We are a nonpartisan group that welcomes people of diverse political beliefs. We believe in respectful dialog, mutual support, and political action to further our ideal of effective and responsive government for all citizens. In keeping with our vision, here are some examples of our work.
Voters Guides - TI has for several election cycles created voters guides that provide the public with our endorsed list of candidates and ballot issues.
Issue Advocacy -
We attend Board and Commission meetings advocating for transparency, accountablity and respectful government for all citizens.
We educate ourselves about issues, e.g., TI held a series of meetings in early 2024 exploring the intersection of mental health and law enforcement.
We sponsored billboards in the run-up to the 2024 elections advocating for environmental, climate and reproductive health causes.
Our members and leaders write letters and op-eds on a wide range of local, state, and national issues.
Community Building -
We held two major events in 2024, with another big event slated for spring of 2025.
A Celebration of Democracy, held in early September, brought together 31 nonprofit groups and 600 people to support democracy, build cross-partisan bridges, and to create and strengthen linkages among the diverse community of advocates and elected officials.
Traverse Indivisible’s Barn Dance was a fun, friendly and memorable occasion to rejoice in our community. Held shortly after the 2024 elections, the Barn Dance was explicitly non-political. With 80 people in attendance, the place filled with old friends, new friends, kids, and wall-to-wall smiles.
Book event - In March 2025 Traverse Indivisible, in collaboration with Leelanau Indivisible, will sponsor a major National Writers Series event at the City Opera House.
Relationship building - At the invitation of individuals and other groups we provide perspectives on how people and groups can become more engaged in influencing the political and social landscape of the area through activism.
