Day 7: Write a Letter of Thanks Regarding 287g Agreements

Today, we recognize and strengthen local leadership that prioritizes community safety over federal deportation quotas. As of now, our sheriffs have chosen community trust over collaboration with ICE, a decision that keeps all residents safer and protects our neighbors from a program designed to terrorize immigrant families.

287(g) agreements turn local police into deportation agents, forcing them to interrogate people about immigration status during routine encounters. These programs destroy community trust, making immigrant survivors afraid to report crimes and witnesses afraid to come forward. Our sheriffs understood that public safety requires community trust, not fear.

Today's Action:

  • Write a brief thank-you letter to both Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael D. Shea and Leelanau County Sheriff Mike Borkovich

  • Acknowledge their commitment to community-centered policing over federal immigration enforcement

  • Mail or email your letters to their offices

  • Share why this matters to you and your vision for inclusive community safety

Sample letter: "Dear Sheriff [Name], Thank you for refusing to sign a 287(g) agreement with ICE. By prioritizing community trust over deportation quotas, you've made our entire community safer. When all people in our community, regardless of immigration status, feel safe reporting crimes and serving as witnesses, we all benefit from stronger public safety. Your leadership in keeping local law enforcement focused on local safety rather than federal immigration enforcement shows true commitment to protecting all residents."
